Case Study

New Computer System Developed by 282 Creative

Project Brief

My client had an existing system written in PHP under their old website. The basis of this system was to manage user accounts for subscription to a website. This system also contained a basic CMS. Although this system was fit for purpose for the old site, in re-doing it, the client decided they wanted a system refresh.

Project Planning

As with any project, planning is essential. 282 Creative met with the client to gather requirements and go through what the existing system had to offer. Research was undertaken into what technologies were available in which to build the new application and how to make it futureproof and as easily maintanable as possible. The technology that was chosen as the platform to write the system on was ASP.NET through the C# programming language.

Future Plans

There are always improvements that can be made to any system, and this one is no different. For now though, it caters to the current user requirements and if it ever needs to expand, then due to careful planning and consideration, it can easily be enhanced.

System Features

There were a number of features that were to be kept and a few additional ones that we were able to implement. Core features of the new system include:

  • Adding, editing and deleting of user accounts
  • Secure subscribers area via integrated logon
  • Flag up account expiries within a month of requiring renewal
  • Updating the main site navigation through the system
  • Uploading of HTML files which are used as the main pages of the website

The old system's CMS allowed for the website administrators to create and amend pages through an online web editor. Although these editors can be quite comprehensive, this one proved to be quite fussy at completing even the simplest of tasks.

As the website administrators are quite competent with creating basic HTML pages, the new system was written to allow for an HTML page to be uploaded and processed to display within the secure area of the website.
